Our poultry are rare, heritage breeds in need of conservation. We support genetic diversity and understand the importance of maintaining the gene pools of all species, regardless of their commercial value. We breed Blue Slate turkeys, Pilgrim geese, Dominique chickens and Khaki Campbell ducks. They are all beautiful, domesticated birds but are in danger of being lost from the Earth forever. Our birds free range and forage on natural prairie grass. Their food is supplemented with household food scraps (never any meat) and grain is provided in the winter. They have free access to clean well water. They are not given growth stimulants, hormones or other artificial chemical additives. However, they do require additional dietary calcium during the egg laying season. Our birds are never maintained in congested, disease prone, enclosed buildings, and so do not need and are never given antibiotics or other medication. The birds are put up at night in open, wire mesh pens to protect them from predators. The pens are spacious and the birds are not over crowded. Each breed has its own pen and the pens are cleaned regularly. Our poultry operation is fairly small, and we can only keep one or two males of each breed to maintain our flocks. New birds are occasionally purchased locally or from reputable national breeders to prevent inbreeding. Our Business: We raise as many birds as we can support during the spring and summer. In the fall we cull the flocks, keeping the best for breeding. The extras are sold to other breeders or hobbyists, or butchered for eating. The meat is lean and very tasty. The birds are processed by a state registered and licensed, family operated, country butcher. Our poultry operation provides the following seasonally available products and services:
